Beware of Massage Myths (Hot Stones)

I have to be honest before I became a Licensed Massage Therapist I was very ignorant of the postive effects of massage on the human body. I never really took good care of my body or even acknowledged the importance of "you only get one body so take good care of it". I always thought the only people that invested in themselves and received massages were billionares who often laid on the beach. I know rite!! This false belief has since changed! Massage is so wonderful it has changed the lives of babies, children,teens, adults, the elderly and even me.

I always laugh when people come into my office to recieve a Hot Stone Massage because I'm always asked if the Hot Stones will melt their skin away. (If you have watched "Big Mommas House" with Martin Lawrence then you understand why people ask) Let me assure you a Hot stone Massage is nothing like that! Hot Stone Massage is a means of comfortably applying heat to your muscles not melting away your skin. The Stones can also be cooled and applied to the body as well.

The volcanic rock basalt stones are heated in a crock pot to 135-140 degrees Farenheit. Then a towel is placed on the back (or the part of the body that will be treated) and the hot stones are placed on top on the towel and a good sensation of heat is felt thru the towel. You may have a few red spots afterward because your circulation is increased and your blood rushes to the surface. This is a good sign your body is working well. These red spots will disappear after a short period of time. Hot Stones can be placed on the face to release tension in the shoulders. The heat in the stones cause circulation to increase and change quickly. Blood flow is increased and the body begins to detoxify and proceed toward the healing process.

Massage Benefits Specific to You

Have you ever had a massage before? If not, I would highly suggest that you get a massage soon. I don’t say this just because I am a Licensed Massage Therapist but, also because massage has many excellent advantages. Massage is exquisite and active in promoting physical and mental health.

A lot of people in Northeast Ohio suffer from depression during the fall and winter seasons because there is less sunlight. When there is less sunlight and more darkness Melatonin is released. Massage increases Serotonin and Dopamine. Serotonin lifts your mood and depression. Dopamine is active during emotional responses and experiences that are pleasant for us.

Many people are stressed due to life’s circumstances. Stress can cause knots/muscle spasms. When you are stressed, your body releases a stress hormone called Cortisol. Cortisol hinders the production of white bloods cells in the body. We need our white blood cells because they aid in fighting off sickness and disease. Cortisol also slows tissue repair which in return can cause our wounds to heal much slower. Massage decreases Cortisol in the body and Trigger Point Therapy allows the tension in the muscles to be released.

Massage is good for those who exercise, have experienced an injury, or have been in a car accident. Massage expands the number of endorphins released in our bodies. Endorphins are the pain killers in our body. Manipulation of soft tissue from massage allows relaxation and refreshing.
